A cervical collar is used to support and protect your neck and spinal cord. These types of collars are typically used for the treatment of neck injuries, neck surgeries, and some instances of neck pain. Cervical collars come in soft and hard varieties. It is also used for the treatment of neck pain, caused by acute trauma or chronic pain. After a whiplash injury, the neck collar can be used for both immobilization and to reduce pain, although the value of the collar over early active mobilizations is questioned as early mobilizations can give a greater improvement in cervical range of motion and in the reduction of pain following a whiplash injury.
